| Striped, Yellow and Orange Tomatoes |
PINEAPPLE TOMATO - BI-COLOR HEIRLOOM
- I have grown "Hawaiian Pineapple Tomato" for years now and it is always one of my top 3 favorites. People are always writing me to ask if it is the same as "Pineapple", which it definitely is not, since "Hawaiian Pineapple" is a solid golden yellow-orange fruit with no stripes or marbling. I figured I should try the "Pineapple" and see what all the fuss was about. "Pineapple Tomato " is an an heirloom tomato that I was told hails originally from Kentucky .Wow, what a great tomato! This baby pumped out immense quantities of huge fruit. They were all at 1 pound minimum, with many up to 2 pounds. I always said my "Hawaiian Pineapple" was my second largest type I have grown.( with my famous "Gigantesque Ukrainian" being the heaviest and largest). Check out the ruler in the one photo. "Pineapple Tomato " probably ties for second place. This was a fairly good growing season in my zone 6A garden, and these huge 7 to 8 foot tall vines produced all summer and are still pumping the monsters out. Today was October 28, and I went out and picked 5 gorgeous fruit. They were all easily over 1 1/2 pounds, and 5-6 inches across! How's that for staying power? And the taste!
Did I mention taste? It is fruity, and so sweet and juicy. Cut one open, and see the psychedelic swirls of red, yellow , gold and pink. Truly one of the most beautiful tomatoes you will ever see. This heirloom tomato really impressed me and I have always had a special fondness for all the striped, bi-color tomatoes and have grown many types ( as you can see by all the ones already on my website) . How could I have gone this long without trying " Pineapple" ? Be sure to add this one to your order, I guarantee you will thank me next season. SORRY SOLD OUT FOR 2008

They are a perfect mid-size fruit, with brilliant color and exotic
markings. Very meaty flesh with excellent sweet flavor. They have very few seeds, so I have a very limited quantity of

ELBERTA PEACH - CANADIAN HEIRLOOM - -Determinate- This is one of the prettiest and earliest of the old heirloom tomatoes that I grew this season. It has 2-3" slightly oblong fruit on rather short 3' vines with very densely white-pubescent (baby) leaves. Most unusual leaves indeed!. Very ornamental plant. The skin is red with orange stripes with interior flesh red My photo can't even begin to show its beauty. SORRY SOLD OUT FOR 2008

HAWAIIAN PINEAPPLE TOMATO
85 days - This is still one of my absolute favorite tomatoes of all. I won't have a garden without it! This heirloom tomato is a a real knockout in everyone's garden. These monster deep orange fruit grow very large, up to 2+ lbs., and are the prettiest golden color inside and out. This was the largest tomato I have ever grown! I won the heaviest tomato blue ribbon at my local farm fairs 2 years running with this. They really do have a pineapple like sweet, fruity flavor. This is the one to grow to amaze your neighbors and win the prizes. SORRY SOLD OUT FOR 2008

| OTHER COLOR Tomatoes |
SOLD OUT FOR 2008 "LANCASTER COUNTY" BIG PINK TOMATO -
- - Potato Leafed - I had received 3 plants in a plant/seed trade . They were supposed to be the fabled "Amish Paste Tomato". I wanted to grow out this tomato again, since I specialize in Amish heirloom seeds. I had grown it years ago but have never offered those seeds for sale on my website. Imagine my surprise when just about the largest beefsteak sized tomatoes I have ever grown started showing up on huge potato leafed vines, extremely early in the season! Now "Amish Paste Tomato " is a small regular leafed rather short vine with fruit about 5 to 8 oz. This tomato was very deep pink and monster sized, especially since it was so early. Most of the amazingly prolific fruit were 1 to 1 1/2 pounds each! Some of the fruit had a bit of green on their shoulders, especially early in the season. The vines grew at least 8 feet or more on very thick strong trunks, like small trees! I could barely stake them, they were so heavy, and I use 6 foot commercial steel farm fence posts for staking most of my tomatoes. In one day I picked about 40 of these giant fruit off of just those 3 plants!
At any rate, I am unable to positively identify these delicious monsters, nor could my seed trade friend. But the good news is that the taste was supreme. They were creamy, sweet, rich, and perfectly balanced. They had that great old fashioned tomato taste we all seek and seldom find. Well, they are still producing huge 1- 1/12 lb fruits, even though it is the very end of October here and the weather turned unseasonably cold these past 2 weeks, and we are about to have frost. Nothing has stopped these tomatoes! They won my yearly tomato taste tests I do with my friends each season. I imagine they are one of those great heirloom pinks, possibly German, because they actually ripen early, despite their huge size. But I really don't know which one it is. Take a wild chance and don't miss out on one of the best tasting tomatoes I have grown in years. My new favorite for taste, if only I knew what it was. So, I am just calling it "LANCASTER COUNTY" TOMATO " since that is where I live and grow out my seed stock, until I can get a positive identity. It ripened in about 70 days from transplant. Try it, I guarantee you will love it! I am giving extra seeds for this one .Please let me know what you think and see if you can help me to identify it. I even sent many photos of this 'mater to a fellow seed seller friend who maintains a collection of over 350 varieties of tomatoes and she couldn't help for a positive identity
| CHEROKEE PURPLE TOMATO -
This tomato has an interesting history. It was introduced in 1991. The seed is from J.D. Green of Tennessee who claimed it had been in his family over 100 years and was originally from the Cherokee Nation. Of the 50+ kinds of tomatoes I grow this is my favorite! This may just be the best tasting large tomato I have ever eaten, even better than the legendary Brandywine. These are a beautiful deep dusky purple-pink color, with just superb, smoky-sweet flavor. Try this one for real old-time tomato flavor. seeds SORRY- SOLD OUT FOR 2008

OLIVER'S GERMAN WHITE / WEISSE TOMATO -
I have always loved white tomatoes and have grown out many varieties . This is absolutely the purest white tomato I have ever grown! These have no pink, no blossom end marks, no yellow, just "pure-as-the-driven -snow" white flesh and skin. I got my original seeds from my German friend, Oliver, in a seed trade. He called them
"Weisse", which is German for white . These had the most unusual growth habit, short vines in height, maybe 4 1/2 feet, but amazingly long branches, over 7-8 feet long, growing sideways! These were tough plants, they even survived a wind storm where they were totally uprooted. I put them back in the ground and they still took off. I guarantee you have never seen a whiter tomato. It has delicate mild flavor . To my knowledge, this tomato has never been available before in the United States. 15 of my own fresh organically grown seeds SORRY- SOLD OUT FOR 2008

EMERALD EVERGREEN or EVERGREEN SORRY SOLD OUT FOR 2008-try the tastier "Spear's Tennessee Green Tomato" instead
-
72 days. This is one of my favorite tomatoes. People just don't seem to "get" green tomatoes and I have to force my friends to try them. But once they do, they are hooked. Large, up to 2 lb fruit that stay green when ripe. This variety was introduced though Seed Savers Exchange by the late tomato collector, Ben Quisenberry. He called it "Evergreen." New research says that this tomato was introduced through Gleckners Seedsmen over 50 years ago. Mild, delicious slightly sweet-spicy flavor. Lime green with yellowish shoulders when totally ripe. Looks super sliced with other colored tomatoes fro a rainbow platter. Its great in a green salsa. Of course, you can fry them too! The green one in the photo is obviously it.

LIDA UKRAINIAN TOMATO - SORRY SOLD OUT FOR 2008!
-This is another of my friend Sergey's tomatoes that I grew out this season . Here is what Sergey said in his own words in an email to me about his Ukrainian tomatoes: "I lived almost 40 years in the Capital of Ukraine and came in the US in 1993. I can say, that tomatoes from the south of Ukraine are very tasty. I start a gardening in US 3 years ago. My sister still lives there and she sent me several kinds of seeds from Crimean peninsula on the Black Sea. The best tomato in the Ukraine is from this place. I have very low quantity of this seeds, but I am going to share with you". Perfect little round red fruit weigh 4-6 ounces and have excellent full , rich old fashioned flavor. And as a nice surprise, these tomatoes were flawless and productive all season. Like all the Ukrainian tomatoes they were very cold resistant and very early. Only 70-80 days from transplant. They were disease resistant as well, this cold rainy summer. This is a very rare tomato, that is not usually found outside of the former USSR. Be the first to grow it in your garden. To the best of my knowledge , I am one of only two people who grows out and sells these seeds commercially in the USA. They are the 3 small red tomatoes on the bottom of the basket photo. Limited quantities order early!

SERGEY'S UKRAINIAN RED TOMATO - ONLY USA SEED SOURCE! ~SORRY SOLD OUT FOR 2008
This was another of Sergey's family tomatoes from the Ukraine. This was supposed to be a pink tomato, but it was definitely red in color. Smaller round size on an almost determinate (bush) plant. Nice clean flavor. To my
knowledge, this tomato has never been available before in the United States.

SABRE UKRAINIAN HEIRLOOM TOMATO - ONLY USA SEED SOURCE!
-Pointy shape- I grew out this great all purpose heirloom tomato from a few seeds I received in a seed trade from a lady's Grandmother who lives in the Ukraine ( formerly in Russia) . Very compact plants are absolutely prolific with strangely shaped elongated fruit with points on the end. I have grown two other paste type tomatoes with this unusual shape and all have very different flavors. Sabre ( think like the shape of a sword) is so meaty and solid fleshed. Virtually no gel and very few seeds. I averaged only 6 seeds per tomato! Perfect thin, bright red skin that peels easily for cooking. It cooked down fast to make the sweetest, richest , thickest tomato sauce . I rate this as the best cooking tomato I have ever tasted , and I have grown out over 100 kinds. This tomato takes a bit longer to reach its full potential, but is well worth the wait. To the best of my knowledge, this tomato is not available from anyone else in the United States

NEW WORLD'S MIRACLE HEIRLOOM RUSSIAN PASTE TOMATO -
- aka MIRACLE OF THE WORLD PASTE TOMATO- RARE I have seen this called both ways. I loved the "modest" name, haha. They may not be a miracle but they are pretty darn good! I got my seeds in a seed trade , and I was amazed at how early and prolific these long pointy paste tomatoes were. Like many paste tomatoes from outside of the United States, they are elongated and have a definite "nipple" on the blossom end. These looked identical to my "Sabre Ukrainian Heirloom Tomato" that I got originally from my wonderful Ukrainian friend, Sergey, except they were about half their size! But that doesn't mean they were half as good, they were super. They were also a good bit earlier. They did not fall off the vine as many of these old time types do when ripe. I really loved the sweet, rich flavor and the fact that were so meaty with almost no seeds.Very thin skin too. They were rather dry inside, which means they are solid with very little wet gel. This makes them perfect for cooking down into rich ,savory sauces, dicing up for salsas, and all kinds of cooking uses. I am sure that once you try the sweet, long type paste tomatoes such as these you will never go back to the egg shaped types we Americans usually cook with. This is a hard to find tomato but well worth the search. Try these and while you are at it, for fun try my double sized " Sabre Ukrainian Paste Tomatoes

SILVERY FIR TREE TOMATO aka CARROT TOP TOMATO SORRY SOLD OUT FOR THE SEASON
This is the cutest and most unusual tomato I have grown. Barely one foot tall, with the strangest silvery foliage, almost blue in color. Delicate, lacy leaves look like exactly like the leaves of carrots only with a silvery cast to them. Small 3" fruit , slightly larger than golf balls, are orange/red and nice flavored. This is an heirloom originally from Russia. It is so diminutive you can easily grow it in pots. These, like many of the Russian tomatoes, seemed to be very tolerant to cold as well.
SORRY SOLD OUT FOR 2008

BLACK FROM TULA TOMATO
This rare Russian heirloom tomato has a reddish brown, deep mahogany color and a nice rich, sweet flavor. Fruits are 8 to 10 oz and well formed for a "black" tomato. This did well in my cold wet spring this season, but did well also when it got hot. Like most Russian tomatoes, it can take a lot of extremes. SORRY SOLD OUT FOR 2008

TENNESSEE CHEESE SWEET PEPPER -SPANISH HEIRLOOM - RARE! This an old Spanish heirloom ROUND Pimiento type pepper, that somehow ended up in Tennessee! They were grown originally in Spain for paprika, and for canned pimientos. But here we eat them as sweet red salad and fresh eating types. Extremely sweet and prolific. They grow on short little bushes and would lend themselves to container growing very well. They look like little round tomatoes, so this style of pepper was referred to as a "tomato pepper". This type of sweet pepper was also called a cheese pepper because they resemble the big wheels of round cheeses sold in the old days. You will come across a lot of old time heirloom vegetables with cheese in the name, which always refers to that resemblance. These succulent little sweeties are insect and disease resistant. They start out green and then turn a brilliant bright red in only about 75-80 days from transplant in my zone 6A gardens. I grow a few "tomato type" little sweet peppers, which are all different varieties. But they also all look very much alike in my photos. So, check out my "Amish Pimiento Sweet Pepper ", and my " Sheepnose Sweet Pepper ", which is also new this year. You will love all three! It doesn't get any sweeter than the "cheese" type sweet peppers such as these. SORRY SOLD OUT FOR 2008
|
SHEEPNOSE PIMIENTO SWEET PEPPER - This is a great heirloom sweet pepper saved by Nick Rini's family in Ohio. This is one of the classic "cheese" or "tomato" shaped sweet peppers that used to be so plentiful before bell type peppers became popular and nearly made these extinct. Now this kind of pepper is having a bit of a resurgance due to the fact that these ripen so much faster to red and are so incredibly sweet. Very juicy thick flesh, which is quite flavorful. This pepper ranks right up there with my "Klari Hungarian Cheese Pepper" and my "Amish Pimiento" in sweetness. These are good keepers too in the refrigerator, lasting up to 4 weeks without losing quality. Very good pepper for canning as well as fresh eating. The fruit are about 4" in diameter. This one is hard to find. My local farm harvest festivals where you enter vegetables still have a category called "sheepnose" but no one can find them to grow anymore, so I win all blue ribbons on these. These sweet red beauties are sure to please.

This was the plant that literally stopped traffic! I live next to a Mennonite ( a sect similar to Amish) Church. People leaving church would always come over and ask about the plant . LUTZERT TOMATT aka Large Groundcherry or Tomatillo
- The husk tomato was introduced to America in the 1840's from Mexico and was quickly loved by the Pennsylvania Dutch, who also grew the small ground cherries or wintercherry or Judenkische. The PA Dutch used to grow it in with pole beans or in with corn and pumpkins in the mid 1800's.A rather large plant about 5 feet high, it was just covered in the cute little green lanterns by seasons end. Perfect in today's cuisine for salsa, it tastes similar to tomatoes. If they are sautéed in butter they become rich and sweet as if brown sugar has been added. The seeds are very small and hard to remove so you will receive half of a large dried fruit.
|
SALSIFY, OYSTER PLANT, "HAWWERWURTZEL" (OAT ROOT) Trapapogon porifolius - These have been cultivated by the Amish and PA Dutch people here since the 1700's. My original seeds came from my dear farm friend Eva who just passed away this June at 89.I am ever indebted to her for sharing her family heirloom seeds, her knowledge she passed onto to me and her wonderful love of gardening. Her family has grown this rare vegetable for 5 generations. Very showy fluffy blue/purple flowers and tall grasslike leaves. A true edible ornamental! The seed must be planted while it is still cold, around mid-March here in Zone 6. The roots are sliced and served in a cream soup as "mock oyster stew" in one of many recipes. The very long thin white roots resemble parsnips in looks. The photos are of its lovely purple flower. Be sure to read my special growing instructions on my " Seed Starting and Growing Tips Page" to learn how to get perfect germination of this usually fussy germinator.
